Minnesota in the winter can bring on some pretty rough weather. Here are some amazing indoor spots around the Twin Cities that can  gorgeous and unique backdrops for your engagement pictures if you don't want to brave our freezing Minnesota winters.

1. Landmark Center -St. Paul MN

The Landmark Center in St. Paul was built in 1892, with construction finishing in 1902. It is a gorgeous historic building full of elegant so many ornate rooms. The large mezzanine floor is a beautiful setting for some artistic photos. This building has 4 floors with massive columns that look like something straight out of a European castle.

Permit info: This location requires a permit. Permits are free, but you still need to schedule in advance. They allow permits for photos on Sundays and Mondays online from 12-4pm.  

2. Minnesota State Capitol

The State Capitol Building in St. Paul is a popular location for engagement pictures. Both the outside of the building, and inside have a wide variety of backdrops for your photos. Iconic photo spots include, the rotunda, grand staircase, and the upper level floors circling the rotunda.

Permit info: No permits or reservations are required for this location. There are a few rules so check out the website for more info: https://www.leg.mn.gov/leg/faq/faq?id=153

3. Local Hotel

There are plenty of hotels in both downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul that have timeless architecture perfect for any engagement session. The photos below are from the Emery Hotel in downtown Minneapolis. Other favorite hotels of mine include the Celeste Hotel in downtown St. Paul (this is an old convent so there is lots of beautiful stained glass, art, and windows) and the Hewing in downtown Minneapolis. Make sure to call ahead and speak with a manager to ask about photo policies before showing up to shoot at a hotel.

Permits: Call ahead or visit the hotel to check with management. Each location likely has different policies. Some may require permits, or want you visiting at non-peak times.

4.Como Conservatory

Believe it or not it is possible to have a tropical engagement session in the middle of the winter in Minnesota. Como Conservatory has multiple garden areas that have beautiful jungle flora and fauna at every turn. It's also super warm in these room (since it's literally a greenhouse) so you can catch a break from the cold. The lighting is amazing in here at any time of day. I've only done senior photos in here, but if this is anyone dream location for engagement pics... hit me up!

Permit info: Permits are required, and photography is only allowed outside of business hours. Prices range from $200-$317 for a 30 minute permit. An alternative to this location that may have lower permit fees, would be to check in with local greenhouses in the area.

5.Local restaurant or bar

If you and your partner have a restaurant or bar that is a special place for you, it could be a great option for engagement photos! Similar to hotels, there are lots of restaurants and bars in the cities that are in beautiful historic buildings. Again, make sure to check with a manager for photo policies!

6.Blair Arcade

Blair Arcade is such an iconic building in St. Paul, the brownstone on the outside is so beautiful. The inside is just as gorgeous. All the exposed brick, wood paneling, and unique tiled floors make for such a fun, classy, and timeless session. The street corner it is on is also super cute as well.

Permit info: no permit necessary! This is a public building, so make sure you are being respectful to the space and others in the area.

7.Minneapolis City Hall

The Minneapolis City Hall was built around a similar timeframe as the Landmark Center and they share some similar features, like the large columns surrounding an atrium. This is hands down the most beautiful building in the cities. This is a very dimly lit space so be prepared for low lighting conditions and some flash photography. The outside of this building is also very unique with a large clock tower and stands out amongst the neighboring skyscrapers.
